an epic opportunity
date: August 5th, 2006.event: Beach to Beacon 10K Road Race.
this race is a pretty big deal in maine. it gets plenty of world-class runners and is a pretty top-notch event. but it's not terribly hard to get into, either... as long as you register early enough. so i got to thinking the other day while i was out jogging, how hard would it be to train for a 6 mile race? not neccesarily to be competitive, just to keep a good pace and finish the race in a respectable time?
doesn't sound like too hard of a proposition, given the chance for some preparation and training. a six mile run isn't exactly a walk in the park, but it's not like you'd be trying to complete a marathon either. i'd guess that 45 minutes would be a reasonable length of time to expect to complete the course in
but then i thought, most anyone can run the race... but it would take a rare breed of mainer to attemt to run the race dressed as a lumberjack. and how much more of a mainer could you hope to be than by running a race that our state is famous for while decked out in the following:
jeans.
boots.
flannel shirt.
thermos.
axe.
ok mabe not the axe... event security would probably spazz if you walked into a crowd of people with an axe slung over your shoulder. but the rest would be do-able, and incredibly epic
most anyone can run a race.
fewer people could be a lumberjack.
and fewer people still could run a race as a lumberjack.
it seems like too golden an opportunity to pass up
