temporary relocation

just for ease of use and coherence of thought and subject matter, i'm moving over to www.thegreatamericanroadtrip.blogspot.com while the road trip is in progress... which it basically is starting now. dave shows up tomorrow night, we leave early tuesday morning, and then we'll be living the nomoadic life for a while. so yeah, that's all i have for now. i'll be back here sometime in a couple months. until then, ciao (that one's for you, sis)

five days

it’s a rare combination of events that brings about such a serendipitous moment as will occur this coming Monday. for not only is it the scheduled beginning of the road trip, but it’s also National Talk Like A Pirate Day! it didn’t even dawn on me until today that both events were scheduled to occur on the same day. how amazingly appropriate is that. two of my favorite events in life: talking like a pirate, and road tripping, occurring on the same day. yarrr, me hearties, this doth make me rum taste all the sweeter

today i cleaned and then varnished the front porch. and if i may say so, it looks cedarliciously beautiful. i also cleaned out my car, and thought about cleaning my room. i’ll probably think about cleaning my room tomorrow, too, as well as paint the bathroom ceiling. despite not working, i’m trying to remain a semi-productive member of society

i watched crash earlier today, and let me just say this: it's an amazingly powerful movie. it deals with race and cultural stereotypes in a way that cuts to the core of the issue, and exposes people for who they really are. well worth a watch. i also just recently saw canadian bacon for the first time, which is pretty much on the complete opposite side of the spectrum from crash. and i think it should be the theme movie for the upcoming road trip... if you've seen it, and know me, you'd understand why. if not, no explanation is necessary, other than the following line from the film: "Like maple syrup, Canada's evil oozes over the United States." precisely why we're invading them soon

more info on national talk like a pirate day can be found here, as well as here. it's actually pretty self-explanatory... just talk like a pirate all day. it's like sunday afternoons at squanto all over again

took awhile to see all the love that's around me
through the highs and lows there's a truth that i've known
and it's You...

phase 2

i think i'm going to retire now, for two reasons: one, life is alot more fun when you don't have to work; and two, i'd like to be able to use my social security benefits before they get washed down the drain. what's the point in waiting until you're old and decrepit and only enjoy bingo and shuffleboard to retire, when you can do it while you're young and can enjoy life to the fullest? that part never makes sense to me. it would seem to be more beneficial to do all the stuff you want to do now... go places, see things, do stuff, etc... and then just work the rest of your life to pay off the debt you'd incur from your meandering ways. i mean, that's sort of the way college works (have fun, rack up debt, work to pay it off the rest of your life), so why can't you extend the principle to the rest of your young adult life? hmmm...

did i mention that i'm done with work? well, probably not work in general, but at least with the warehouse. for good, this time, i think. of course, i've said that before only to return a semester or two later, but this time i'm going to try and make sure it's different. not that it's a horrible place to work... it's been a blessing in some ways over the past four and a half years (holy crap, have i really been there that long? crikey), but it's definitely time to move on, for a plethora of reasons

spent some time down at old orchard beach this afternoon. i feasted on some pier fries (which are pretty much the best. fries. ever. anywhere.), frolicked in the waves, and enjoyed the unseasonably warm weather and the seasonably freezing cold water. and it was a good day. i found a sweet pair of shoes on sale at ems for only twenty bucks. score. i'd been looking for a good pair of water shoes/sandals, and these are the perfect fit. literally. there was only one pair left on the shelves, and they were my size. i took it as a sign from above, and bought them posthaste

i just finished reading the bourne identity, and let me tell you what: the movie was really good, but the book is unreal. i mean, it was so intense at times, i had to remind myself to breathe. wow. definitely worth picking up if you're looking for a good espionage thriller

coming this weekend... the great american road trip. i got my national parks pass that i ordered in the mail today, so we are even one more step closer towards being all systems go. holy crap i can't wait

i typed out an entry, then my computer crashed, so it's gone, and i need to have my computer looked at a.s.a.p. cause it's having some trouble with overheating...

but, i don't care, because there's only ten days left until the road trip. t e n d a y s. woot

i'm still full

so today, i ate a one-pound burger at a movie theater. and as a result, i received a free movie ticket. thank you, stomach.

went and saw march of the penguins with liz, grandma, and aunt erin. really good movie. i couldn't help but think of two things, though: 1. is there anybody else in the world who has had more narration parts in major films than morgan freeman? and, 2. if i was a penguin, would it be fun? i think it might be... except for the treks across snow-covered deserts while nearly starved to death, and weathering brutal antarctic storms. other than that it looks like a pretty sweet existence. plus, they just plain look cool. is there any other creature in the animal kingdom who pulls of the "humorously dignified" look as good as the penguin? i think not

every day i continue to be amazed at the current state of affairs in the hurricane-ravaged regions down south. it makes you feel small and insignificant, and wonder why a loving God would cause something like this to happen. we're only inconvenienced by the spike in gas prices (and don't get me started on how much of a contrived "emergency hike" in prices that is. it's much more likely to be disgustingly blatant extortion), while there are entire cities that are just completely gone down south. how do you even start to rebuild... or do you? if it was your house in new orleans that's still ender a few feet of water, do you just give up on it and start over somewhere new? what about the mortgage you still owe, the friends and family and memories you're leaving behind? what of all that? it's a decidedly unenviable situation, and my heart and prayers go out to everyone affected

i'd almost forgotten the beauty of the sunday-after-church-nap over the course of the summer. i became intimately reaccquainted with it this afternoon... gosh do i love naps. mmmmm

if you have any suggestions for things to see or do during the upcoming great american road trip, i'd love to hear them. we have a huge and open itinerary, so nothing is too far-fetched... as long as it's cheap and you can drive there, we're on it
